Sanity versus Insanity

On December 04, 2010 I wrote a blog titled Tidbits of Information. It dealt with my concerns or convictions of individuals being labeled with varied mental health diagnosis. The possibility was there for physical health issues being the culprit instead; things yet undiscovered in the 1700s-1900s. I collaborated with an out-of-town psychiatrist who would get back with me regarding the required information of this era. Regretfully, I was unable to obtain the info that I needed to continue my blog on that subject. I would welcome insight from anyone that could add to these thoughts.

Recently, I read an article on how mental illness possibly has an effect on an artist’s work. One of the artists in the article was William Blake. It seems most of his drawings and poetry was inspired by visions that he not only saw but with whom he spent time conversing. As in the case of William Blake, many have taken this train of thought to connect art with a form of madness.

Thinking of a close friendship of mine, I think of a person that has been asked to draw this thing or things which he sees. These drawings are horrendous to the point of causing concern to the psychiatrists’ involved in this case. This particular person has several mental health issues; but in many other areas of his life, he is quite intelligent.

Once more, I pick up the thought of labeling. Have we continued to label individuals
not based on their saneness, but their insaneness because we, as a people, have determined what is sane and what is not…..

I know there are areas where there are absolutely no questions that someone is perversely ill mentally. But, where do we draw the line in labeling or casting a shadow of negativity on someone that may not be as MAD as we have projected them to be?….

Oh Sandy.... Wow...

The subject of mental illness is a minefield....Human beings are complicated in their uniqueness...Where do we draw the line between mental health or ill health; madness or badness?

Depending on the symptoms of the mental illness it could generate the most wonderfully inspired art and writings and on the other hand, in the case of a depressive illness could sink the individual into a place so dark they are rendered helpless and mentally disabled...

I don't think madness equates to intelligence...and who is to say that visions or auditory hallucinations are not real?

This post hooked me in..almost 1.30a.m. I shall sleep now..perchance to dream...<3

Thank you Linda for the reading..I am very much into the mental health field and always have been. I think, long ago, they did much work on a trial and error basis. I have read so much recently about Charles Darwin and was saddened to learn that so many of his theories were proven to be untruths...Anyway, one should take care in judging or tagging others...

Yes, absolutely Sandy.. there is a very fine line between genius and insanity. Can't believe you are into this. You know I'm in this line of work and seeing both sides of the coin at the moment. x

Wow... I do believe that you and I are very much clicking along on the same wave length; more than we realize...But, I worked in the field for years and loved it.. Saw things that should not have been; these things hurt the patients in some cases. Yes, I am very much an advocate on this topic...

PS.... Yes, you are in this line of work and have perceptiveness on the subject. You are both subjective and objective; for sure...

Yes the subject of insanity is a difficult one. when we create a bench mark as to what is insane and what is sane . This is not to interpret the matter literally.
Sometimes some one we call mad seems to be venting the logical opinion , which our closed mind refuses to see , to accept. This is my take.
As it has more often been with the matters of great men of letters and art.
Was Lewis Carol susceptible to bouts of insanity? Van Gogh? I don't know. Well they have created time less master pieces , if madness can do that well so b it.

This is so true and if madness does do that, then it is what it is but I find myself wondering about all of these things....:-)

I read this earlier today, Sandy, and thought I'd left a comment, but I must have not clicked on "publish" because it's not here.
What I said was: I saw the picture and recognized it immediately as William Blake. I am a great fan of Blake's work. I know that he saw visions, and conversed with them. I'm sure he did see them, in his own mind at least. I don't know if that means he suffered from some kind of mental illness or not, but he was a highly gifted man in the arts. He was a truly great poet and also a master painter and illustrator...arguably the greatest painter/poet of all time. Many artistic people are eccentric...that Blake was more eccentric than most, seems likely, but I still admire the man. Interesting and intriguing write.

Robert...I am glad that you know of Blake and his talents..I just abhor seeing labels on people; especially back in those days when any med field was what we now look at as dark ages compared to now...Yes, he was very talented.. We have come a long way in the field of medicine..Wonder what they would do, or say about him now..and many just like him...

A close friend of mine who is a psychiatrist once told me that all mental illnesses can be diagnosed to have physiological reasons; chemical imbalances, faulty discharges in the brain etc. Madness is a relative term; all those who do not toe the line of the majority are considered neurotic or psychotic; I have found more abnormal people among the so-called normal.

The world of mental health is an fascinating thing. I totally agree with you in that all of those who do not toe the line of the majority are considered neurotic or pshchotic. I worked in a facility where things were done that negatively impacted the patients...all at the disgression of the MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS..I suppose this is why I wonder about all of the long ago diagnosis and treatments of those patients... Thank you Bala for stopping by..
